veggie help!

August 6, 2010

Now, in recent years, I’ve learned valuable tips and tricks for cooking. I feel like I’ve improved my own skills, even just by a little bit. But one thing I still have trouble with is how to pick fresh vegetables and the right way to store them so that they will keep and not be wasted.

Lo and behold, on Yahoo’s frontpage this morning, they featured a great article on how to pick some fresh veggies, as well as giving tips on how to cook each one. Vegetables on the roster? Artichokes, asparagus, beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, corn, eggplant, fennel, green beans, leeks, peas, red-skinned and yellow-fleshed potatoes, spinach and chard, acorn squash, delicata squash, summer squash and zucchini, sweet potatoes, and turnips. Check it out here – thanks, Yahoo and Shine!

Also, another great resource is my friend Sara’s food blog, Nomad with Cookies (for those of you who tweet, you can follow her at http://twitter.com/nomadscookies). She is a fantastic chef and great person all around! I love reading her blog because she is able to create amazing food – some exotic (at least, to me!) but all great. If you want to try extraordinary food, you need to visit her blog. I’ve made her asparagus-penne-and-goat-cheese recipe and Tahinopita Nistisimi (apple tahini cake) and I’m definitely game to try some of her other recipes. Anyways, she had posted a “series” on how to store your food properly. Such a big help to me because I’ve wasted too many fruits and vegetables due to improper storage. I highly recommend checking out her links below.
